I got the B550 Aorus pro V2 for my 5800x, very happy with it.
B550 is a lot cheaper than X570 with not too many compromises (mainly only having 1 PCIe gen 4 M.2 slot and 1 gen 3 slot instead of 2 gen 4 slots)

Exactly, the b550 socket is cheaper and you are not losing much by not going x570

Depends, b450/x470/b550/x570 all support zen 2 and zen 3. Zen 3 is the last gen that will be on the am4 socket….so upgradability is not a problem here.
I think it really depends how much the board are priced. If the 500 series board are not much more expansive I would definitly get one of those (b550 or x570) I know for overclocking and components quality the Gigabyte b550 is a solid choice. If not a b450 tomabawk is a good deal. It really depend on how much they are and how much you value your own money.

yes. Not all b450 can do the 5000 and none will support the newer series. Also the b450 does not have the capability to use some of the features of the 3000 and 5000 series cpus. X570/b550 may support the 6000 series but it is not currently guaranteed as the 500 series motherboard not support ddr5 and they will be releasing next gen ryzen late this year or early next year along with ddr5.

I guess the other question would be when would he likely upgrade. In a year, or in 5 years. If a year go with a 450 in five years everything will be mostly obsolete anyways. Or get a 550 and have it just in case.

Depends on your needs. B450 if needs are lower.
B550 or x570 is the route to go for more power/expandability.
Personally, just stay away from MSI or asrock. The quality of boards from them has plummeted.

Hiram Perez in that case, I recommend this:
Gigabyte B450M DS3H V2 Motherboard
It has 1 M.2 slot, 2 PCIe 16x slots, 4 DIMM slots with an upper limit of 128GB of ram.
I use those in my entry level systems. Out of 300 built and sold, only 1 came back due to the user damaging the board.
They go for about $80 on Amazon

If no plans on heavy overclocking and no need for gen4 pcie nvme, a b550 all the way. If you want to get the best looking with the best features, or you want to use more than 1 gen4 nvme or want to do heavy overclocking, an x570. I don’t overclock due to it being worse than pbo 2.0 on almost all 3000/5000 cpus but I have a x570 and love it. Great performance and features.

I see people suggesting B450 I advise against going B450 and B550. I want to point out B450 VRM and chipset is not as good it does not have as many features also does not have PCI-E 4.0. B550 VRM and chipset is not as good it also does not have as many features and only the top M.2 is PCI-E 4.0. The budget motherboard you should get is the X570 Tuff Gaming here is one for $178.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SXFK1TP/
It is not worth cheaping out on the motherboard because that is the one part that is the biggest pain in the ass to upgrade. Also, you will want a Good VRM if you are going to want to upgrade to a 5900X or 5950X when the price for these plummets in a few years. When AM5 comes out and newer better CPU’s are released in the future the price for 5000 series is going to plummet and at that time you might want to upgrade.
The motherboard I linked to above has two M.2 ports that are both PCE-E 4.0 and eight SATA ports all can be occupied simultaneously without any getting disabled there are better boards than this one but this board has everything you really need and at a great price. It is also worth noting Gigabyte makes an even better motherboard that has three M.2’s and an even better VRM but that board is $360 and it only has six SATA ports.
Also, Asus makes some better boards with better VRM and they have the same two M.2 and eight SATA ports in my opinion they also look cooler. I personally went with the Asus Crosshair VIII Hero (WIFI) when I bought mine it was $380 it is much more than that now.
Keep in mind that RTX IO has been showcased by Nvidea and this feature works with Gen 4 NVME SSD’s and if you’d like to take advantage of this new tech on the Nvidea 3000 series and newer GPU’s you’ll want a motherboard with PCI-E 4.0 support also both the new consoles are PCI-E 4.0 and new features that utilize the blazing speeds of Gen 4 NVME SSD’s are already being discussed for future games if you go with B450 you are only on PCI-E 3.0 and B550 only your top M.2 is PCI-E 4.0.
